The wind howled all last night and rain sluiced down so hard that the stream rose and broke its banks this morning. The water brought down tons of leaves and sticks so that the fence beside the stream became choked and made a first rate dam. This afternoon we waded into the water to unblock the fence and at the same time to fill our boots with freezing water. Success on both counts, although more in the boots than needed.
The paddocks have turned into a swamp - much enjoyed by the pigs - with mud that sucks at your boots and it's inevitable that either Lee or me are going to fall over (or be knocked over) with a full feed bucket in hand. The pigs spend half the day asleep in their arks and the rest of the time (whatever the weather) digging. Feeding them is a bigger problem. The ground is too wet and the troughs get full of mud because the 'girls' insist on putting their feet in their dinner. We are trying out a piece of heavy plywood as a base on which the OSBs (who have made the most of the mud) can be fed. It works pretty well as soon as the four of them settle down, however, the ply makes a good skating rink, and the opening tussle for space and feed looks like an ice hockey match.
